Where Your Suffolk County Ticket Goes

Suffolk County does not send every ticket to one courthouse. Where yours is heard depends on where it was written and what it charges. We handle all of them.

Western Towns: SCTPVA

Tickets issued in Babylon, Brookhaven, Huntington, Islip, and Smithtown generally go to the Suffolk County Traffic and Parking Violations Agency in Hauppauge.

SCTPVA hours, phone, and process

East End: Town Courts

East Hampton, Riverhead, Shelter Island, Southampton, and Southold each hear tickets in their own town court, not at SCTPVA.

Village Courts

Many incorporated villages, from Amityville to Westhampton Beach, keep their own justice court for tickets written inside the village. Check the court printed on your ticket.

Misdemeanors: District Court

DWI, driving with a suspended license, and reckless driving are misdemeanors. In the western towns they go to the First District Court at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip.

Before You Pay

What a Suffolk County Ticket Can Cost You

Paying a ticket is the same as pleading guilty. The conviction goes on your driving record and the points are applied based on the date of the violation, not the date you paid.

Accumulating 11 points within 24 months can trigger a suspension of your license. Separately, 6 or more points within 18 months triggers a Driver Responsibility Assessment from the DMV of $100 per year for three years, plus $25 per year for each point over six. That is on top of the court fine and any increase in your insurance premium.

Nothing appears on your license and no fine is due until your case is resolved, so there is time to get help first.

Why Hire an Attorney

What Representation Can Mean for Your Case

In Suffolk County, an attorney can negotiate with the prosecutor before your case is decided. In almost every case we handle, the points are eliminated or significantly reduced, and fines are often reduced as well. Your record, your insurance, and your license are what that protects.

Suffolk County Traffic Tickets: Common Questions

Where is my Suffolk County traffic ticket handled?
It depends on where the ticket was issued. Tickets from the five western towns (Babylon, Brookhaven, Huntington, Islip, and Smithtown) generally go to the Suffolk County Traffic and Parking Violations Agency in Hauppauge. The eastern towns of East Hampton, Riverhead, Shelter Island, Southampton, and Southold use their own town courts, and some incorporated villages keep their own village courts. Misdemeanor charges such as DWI go to the First District Court in Central Islip. The return court is printed on your ticket.
Do I have to go to court for a Suffolk County traffic ticket?
In most cases, no. Once you hire us, we enter the not guilty plea and appear on your behalf at the agency or the local court, so you do not have to take time off work or travel to Hauppauge.
Should I just pay my Suffolk County ticket?
Paying a traffic ticket is the same as pleading guilty. A conviction goes on your driving record, points are applied based on the date of the violation, and your insurance carrier can see it. Talk to an attorney before you pay.
Do red light camera tickets carry points?
No. Red light camera citations, which SCTPVA handles in the western towns, are issued to the vehicle owner and carry no points. A red light ticket written by a police officer is different and carries 3 points.
How much does a Suffolk County traffic ticket lawyer cost?
My Ticket Fairy charges a flat retainer fee with no hidden costs. The amount depends on the violation. Submit your ticket for a quote.
I got a ticket in the Hamptons. Can you help?
Yes. We handle tickets in the East End town and village courts, including East Hampton, Southampton, Riverhead, Southold, and Shelter Island, as well as the village courts in that part of the county.
